On Millennium night, with Blair presiding over a superficially cool, sexed-up new version of the country, Benjamin Trotter finds himself watching the celebrations on his parents' TV in the same Birmingham house in which he grew up. He is watching his brother, Paul, now a young New Labour MP who has bought wholeheartedly into the Blairite dream.

Né en 1961, à Birmingham, en Angleterre, Jonathan Coe a fait ses études à Trinity Collège à Cambridge. Il a écrit des articles pour le Guardian, la London Review of Books, le Times Literary Supplement... Il a reçu 1e prix Femina Étranger en 1995 pour son quatrième roman, Testament à l'anglaise (Folio n° 2992) et le prix Médicis Étranger en 1998 pour La Maison du sommeil (Folio n° 3389). La femme de hasard est son premier roman.
